Few of us look forward to dental exams. First the visit needs to be scheduled, then there's likely a co-pay, followed by a waiting room experience that can seem like an eternity and then - when you're finally recline uncomfortably in the big white chair - you open your mouth wide so someone can poke you in the gums. So why do we go twice a year? The obvious answer is because most people understand that finding the start of a cavity at a check-up is much better than the horrors of a painful toothache.

Unfortunately, many facility managers ignore the benefits of this preventative approach. In fact, more than half - 55 percent - use a reactive approach. Oftentimes, the thinking is, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." While this might seem like a good idea when operations run smoothly for days, weeks or even months, ignoring routine maintenance can lead to something akin of a root canal.
