Clean Rooms and Environments

Clean Rooms and Environments

Meeting the standards of a clean room can be a daily if not hourly challenge. Depending on the industry, any number of governing entities can be involved in setting the latest standards. And passing U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)* and/or U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspection is critical on many levels. At the very least there should be low levels of environmental contaminants, namely dust, airborne microbes, aerosol particles, or chemical vapors. More accurately, a clean room has a controlled level of contamination that is specified by the number of particles per cubic meter at a specified particle size—depending on the industry.

Clean rooms or environments also need to be conducive for effective wash-down. Simple design and construction plus durable materials are product requirements in order to withstand high-pressure cleaning and harsh chemicals. In the food manufacturing and processing industry as well as pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities, clean requirements are stringent and products must rise to the challenge. Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point System (HACCP) is important to meat and poultry plants, for instance, to assure food safety. Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOP) are required by the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) and are considered one of the prerequisite programs of HACCP.
