Dok-Lok Vehicle Restraints

Rite-Hite pioneered the vehicle restraint industry by introducing the Dok-Lok® in 1980. Rite-Hite has continued to evolve Dok-Lok truck restraints to meet the changes and challenges of the industry, including trailer design, loading dock design and regulatory compliance.

Rite-Hite Dok-Loks, also referred to as truck restraints, trailer restraints or dock locks, are known world-wide for:

  • Exclusive Dok-Lok safety features, which address more types of trailer/dock separation than any other restraints.
  • Exclusive light communication system that provides FULL-TIME communication of the Dok-Lok status to the forklift driver at the loading dock and while inside the trailer.
  • Superior quality resulting from unique design characteristics, the highest construction standards and years of research and development.
  • Proven long-term reliability confirmed by an extensive list of satisfied repeat customers.

Rite-Hite Vehicle restraints are designed to provide the highest level of safety based on your application. Dok-Loks are the only truck restraints in the industry that provide full-time communication of the lock’s engagement status to the forklift driver.

Know Your Risks

1. Early departure: a truck driver mistakenly drives away while a lift truck is entering, leaving, or inside the trailer.

2. Trailer creep: a trailer can move substantially under the weight of a forklift entering and exiting a trailer.

3. Landing gear collapse: weak or damaged landing gear gives way and the trailer pitches forward or falls to the side.

4. Trailer pop-up: the weight of a forklift sends the rear of the trailer forward and down, causing the nose to rise.

5. Trailer upending: the weight of a lift truck sends the trailer’s nose down, causing the rear end to move up and away from the building.

Trailer separation (also known as Early Departure or Aggressive Pullout) is when a truck driver mistakenly drives away while a forklift (or lift truck) is actively loading a trailer, causing a forklift to fall out of the trailer or drive off the 4 foot drop off. Considering this accounts for 7% of all loading dock accidents, this cannot be ignored.   In 1980, Rite-Hite developed the first vehicle restraint of its kind, the Dok-Lok®, designed to keep trailers from separating from the dock, has helped protect employees during loading and unloading for over 40 years. Evolution of Rigs Hooks

Video

For more than four decades, Rite-Hite's Dok-Lok® Rotating Hook Restraints have helped protect people and products from dangerous incidents like trailer separation accidents and cargo theft at the loading dock. Learn more about how our Rotating Hook design has evolved alongside RIGs to help ensure today’s docks are safe tomorrow. Since Rite-Hite's early beginnings, we’ve focused on innovation. In 1975, our founder recognized the dangers of trailer separation accidents. And in 1978, OSHA did too. After years of research and development, Rite-Hite introduced the original Dok-Lok in 1980. With this simple-but-revolutionary step beyond standard loading dock safety, an entire industry was born. Designed to capture ICC bars with its straight shank rotating hook, OSHA immediately accepted Dok-Loks as an alternative to wheel chocks in 1981. In 1998, NHTSA adopted new standards to replace ICC bars with strengthened Rear Impact Guards (RIGs). Anticipating the change by staying ahead of industry trends and regulations, Rite-Hite launched the new “fishhook” design to capture larger 4x4 RIGs that same year. As global logistics continued to transform the trucking industry, Rite-Hite understood the need to address these new loading dock challenges and to evolve alongside our customers. In 2012, Rite-Hite launched our third-generation contoured hook design. Providing more wrap than competitive hooks, we designed it to capture the widest variety of RIG-based trailers with exclusive Shadow Hook® technology, adding an additional layer of protection to help keep intermodal containers and obstructed RIGs secure. In 2017, leading trailer manufacturers approached Rite-Hite to ensure their reinforced RIG designs would be compatible with our third-generation hook. This partnership protected our existing customers’ investment in loading dock safety while helping assure Dok-Lok would continue to win against new challenges including reinforced pentagonal RIGs. Every time the industry has changed standards; we’ve already exceeded expectations. The original Dok-Lok by Rite-Hite. Proven simplicity that’s always improving. A hardened dual-articulating nose extension allows the Dok-Lok to capture a wider variety of trailers. The chainless flood-resistant motor removes maintenance prone moving parts and drives Rite-Hite's exclusive spring-loaded, latch-free Shadow Hook®, which helps keep products and people safely in place no matter what type of trailer backs into position. Other vehicle restraints break down from wear, tear, and misapplication. Dok-Loks are designed and applied for your specific needs.
