FROMMELT(TM) Division History

Red Bar GIF

FROMMELT (TM) Industries of Dubuque, Iowa, invented the first loading dock shelter in 1951 at the request of a local shipper who needed an environmental closure for his loading dock to keep insects and other pests out of the loading dock area. Over the past 45 years, FROMMELT has continued to follow this path of designing customized, creative solutions for customer needs. Working closely with our customers and staying in tune with market conditions such as new truck/trailer traffic, new building designs, and innovative loading and unloading techniques keeps us moving forward on our mission to provide you with the highest quality, most innovative, and most effective dock enclosures available.

Loading dock seals and shelters provide an environmental enclosure between the back of a truck or trailer and a loading dock door. Dock seals and shelters are important because they:

  • Improve Employee Comfort.
  • Conserve Heating and Cooling Costs (estimated at $1900 per year per loading dock position).
  • Maintain temperature and environmental control.
  • Protect the loading dock against dirt, debris, and harsh elements.
  • Keep snow, ice, and rain off dock levelers, floors, and products being loaded and unloaded.
  • Improve dock safety by decreasing slips, falls, and lift truck skids.

FROMMELT(TM) division offers a full line of seven major seal and shelter designs to meet the unique needs of your loading dock. In order to determine which design will work best for you, we need you to answer several questions about how your dock will be designed and utilized. These questions include Dock/Site Condition questions such as:

  • Door Size
  • Bumper Protection
  • Building Wall Construction
  • Grade of drive approach
  • Distance between door center lines
  • Placement of obstructions above or between doors
  • Other building conditions, such as negative air pressure

and Loading Dock Usage Questions:

  • Range of truck heights and widths to be serviced
  • Types of vehicles to be serviced
  • Are trucks loaded full width from side to side?
  • Are trucks loaded all the way to the top?
  • Are trailers spotted with yard jockeys?
  • Which is more important, the tightest seal possible or unrestricted access to the back of the trailer?

After we determine how your dock will be used, we can then recommend the correct design for your operation. In order to accomplish this, we rely on an international network of factory-trained local representatives who will visit your facility and work through a survey of your loading dock at no cost to you. Each FROMMELT(TM) product is custom designed and built to meet your specific needs.
