Impact Door Guidelines to KNOW
When door is to be installed for temperature control:
Know the temperatures on each side of the opening.
Know that a 30 degree variance determines the door model & facing material.
Know that a fully sealed 1- 3/4” thick impact door will provide a good thermal barrier.
Width of the opening determines the available clearance for traffic passing through:
Know that the width of the traffic must be no more than 60% of the opening width.
For example…A fork lift is normally 48” wide; this would require the width of the opening to be 7’6” or more.
Measurement & observation of the opening is extremely important:
Know that you need to measure three widths & three heights.
Know that if you error in measuring, the installation of the door is jeopardized.
Know how to look for a floor that is not level. If the floor inclines or declines, it will affect the manufactured size of the proposed door.
The door is only as good as the jamb where it is installed:
Know that the factory recommendation is a 6” wide, 5/16” thick steel channel for models 4800 & 2600.
Know that the factory recommendation is a 4” wide, 3/16” thick steel channel for models 3800, 3600 & 3400.
Know that a number of mounting brackets are available to aid with proper installation.
Know that in lieu of the recommended jambs, there are alternatives.
An impact door is not designed for high cycle usage:
Know that 30 cycles per hour is maximum.
A correctly designed door can be used in wash down or cooler applications:
Know what the wash down process will be. If chemicals are used, find out the concentration if there is a question as to the chemical’s affect on the door materials.
Know that cooler temperatures are very important as well as customer expectations for temperature control.
